You can't teach a hungry child!
This blogging business is difficult at times... The last few weeks have been (as Paddy would say) character-building, thus the silence from my corner! But, despite what we were going through, we still have a lot to be very grateful for!
A while ago I was paging through the Weekend Argus, and there I saw a picture that has put me on a new and meaningful course... The face in the advertisement compelled me to pick up the phone that Monday morning, and go and visit the Peninsula School Feeding Association. At last I had found a charity that I believe in and want to support!
This morning I was privileged to be invited to visit one of the schools that this charity supports... We left town to be on time for the feeding programme to begin. I arrived with a bag of 400 chocolates, enough to give one each to the Grade R's, Grade 1's, Grade 2's and Grade 3's. There are, however, over a 1000 kids attending that school.
To sponsor 1 child for a year, and, not only give them nourishment, but also contribute towards their education, can cost you as little as R205 per annum - that's less than we spend on dinner every evening! I remember how hard it was to concentrate in class because I was hungry, and break was 15 minutes away. Now imagine that you only have one meal a day, and you are expected to listen in the classroom.
I also want to encourage those of you who have children, privileged children, to expose them to this reality, in the hopes that they will fully grasp how much we have!
I cannot think of a more fitting way for this chef to give back - so I will be helping out with fund raising and functions, and in whatever way I can. I urge you to get involved too - visit their website and please help make a difference.
