We arrived home at 02h30 this morning after a delightful dinner and evening with friends. So, needless to say, we slept in, and after a late breakfast feast (because Paddy's goddaughter is visiting and the three of us love enjoying food together), I decided to watch the last third (I have been watching the movie in stages over the past few days) of Shawshank Redemption with Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman... What a movie! I am inspired every time I watch it! Remember where Andy (Tim Robbins) escapes, and in the next couple of days Red (Morgan Freeman) and the gang are working in a field, and Red says something to the effect of : "Sometimes I need to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged - their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up, does rejoice..."
I feel so privileged! So many people live their lives caged, not able to be what they were made to be, not able to fly! I have been there before - doing work for the sake of a salary was my main 'warder'. On Friday we had no power all day long, and I was asked by a very special person to cater for her birthday party - about 30 people, and she was adamant that she did not want to put plates out. Well, who does want to do dishes on your birthday!? So, I planned a menu of small bite-sized pastries, crostini with various toppings, an array of cheeses, and other yummy bits. At 16h00, there I was 'toasting' ciabatta slices on my griddle pan on the gas stove, no refrigeration, no music, just quiet. Paddy was rubbing cloves of lucious garlic onto each slice, I was humming away, happy! And I wondered why this inconvenience wasn't getting to me? And then I remembered - I WAS FREE! I was doing what I love doing! I was happy! I had the perfect life for me! What a powerful realisation!
On that note - I have decided to investigate various eco-friendly options like wind-generators, solar heating, etc. Why be held captive by things like an electricity supply? Surely we can be creative and get by without it? I will keep you posted...
I trust that you are living a free life as well!
Sophia! I've really enjoyed reading your posts, you have a wonderful way of looking at things. Hope you get hooked up with some alternative power - it should be an interesting read!
