We had a wonderful impromtu dinner with Neal, Tara, Jon and Leah last night. We tried a new recipe that I was given by a friend. At first I thought it was a joke - you basically "sit" a chicken on a half-filled can of beer, then cook it in the Weber. So, while it cooks, the beer steams and adds an amazing flavour! We named this recipe "Chicken Elliot" (for reasons best not divulged), and we also prepared "Chicken Malcolm" (because I rubbed it with the most awesome spice that my very special friend, Malcolm, gave me on Friday evening). Then I prepared the most amazing potato bake, and I roasted vegetables. We ended the meal with a yummy fruit cobbler! Aaaah, life is perfect!
We got to bed in the early hours of this morning, and were up to enjoy breakfast with Neal and Tara before their flight back to Johannesburg. While I was chopping fresh herbs for the omelettes, Paddy and I heard a commotion, and next thing, there he was in our home - a red-winged starling! He flew down the chimney and straight into my row of elephants that live on a windowsill. Can you imagine his shock! My Gary Larson side and my Walt Disney side collided somewhere in cyberspace, and this comedy-a 'la-tragedy movie / childrens' book happened in my head. I thought of calling it something like "Sammy Starling's startling Sunday ..."
We planted a mulberry bush this morning, it's raining lightly in Cape Town, something like 35 000 cyclists are doing the Argus Cycle Tour today, my parents arrived from up country, and Sammy Starling is safe outside with the other birds, thanks to Paddy!
